About me

The experience behind SQL Studio.

I’m Marcin, a software engineer with more than 20 years of experience — and the former Technical Lead and Product Owner for MySQL Workbench at Oracle.

From Workbench to an independent project

I started working on SQL Studio following a series of layoffs at Oracle. After years of helping develop and maintain MySQL Workbench, I wanted to keep building on that experience and continue improving a tool that database developers rely on every day.

SQL Studio is an independent, open-source project built on the foundations of MySQL Workbench. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Oracle.

My work on MySQL Workbench

Oracle / MySQL · 2015–2025

As Principal Software Developer, Technical Lead and Product Owner, I combined hands-on engineering with responsibility for the direction and delivery of MySQL Workbench. My role covered the full development and release process, including security and ongoing maintenance.

  • Core development: developing and maintaining Workbench features in C++ and Python.
  • Product direction: leading product planning, strategic development and the feature roadmap.
  • Release delivery: overseeing the release process across Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • Security and maintenance: taking care of security work and the long-term health of the application.
  • Performance and reliability: optimizing application logic and database integrations, and investigating crashes through dump analysis.

I also worked on the MySQL Shell GUI, developing its React interface and improving the experience of interacting with MySQL Shell.

What I’m focusing on now

We’re working intensively on SQL Studio’s stability and appearance. Ready-to-install binary downloads are coming soon. You can follow our progress on GitHub and watchthe releases page for available builds.

Alongside this project, I work as a Principal Software Engineer at Hitachi Energy in Kraków, a role I started in December 2025. I develop software for real-time power-grid data processing and Wide Area Monitoring Systems, including communication protocols such as IEC 60870-5-104 secured with TLS. My broader background spans C++, C# and Python, Windows applications and database integration.
